Fingermarks

A Unquely Charleston Tours Walking Tour

Fingermarks of enslaved children imprinted on Charleston bricks...

It’s amazing what we walk by every day. The streets and alleys in the Historic District hide their history in plain sight.

Before about 1870 bricks were made by hand. Made by enslaved hands, actually. After harvesting clay from river’s edge, then seasoned over the winter, it would be hauled to the mixer where it was combined with sand and water. After being slapped into a mold, the bricks were turned out on the ground to dry.

Enslaved children were charged with turning each brick over and over until they were completely dry. When a child touched, lifted or pushed the heavy, damp bricks sometimes they left their fingermarks in those bricks.

That physical evidence of the labor, the existence, of the enslaved brickmakers remains today.
Historians and archeologists have found hundreds of those fingermarks in Charleston.

We’ve made them easier for you to find with the What3words app. Find it in your app store.

The photographs are here. The app will tell you where they are with in about 10 square feet. History becomes tangible.

You can let us know when you find more fingermarks by emailing a photo with the What3words location to fingerprints@uniquelycharleston.tours.

Personalized tour of Charleston

I grew up in Charleston and brought my husband with me on a weekend vacation who had never been here before. I didn’t have any clue how to share the cultural and historical experience of the city with him and somewhat fortuitously, I ran into Paul at a family friend’s graduation party and he happened to be available for a custom tour the next morning! Paul is incredibly knowledgeable about aspects of the city you’d never find in brochures, tour books, or on normal tours. The details he draws attention to are thought provoking and something one might easily miss if they didn’t know to look for it, like handprints on bricks, name changes on store fronts, window panes and brick patterns that indicate when a house was built... When Paul describes the history of the city, it’s easy to envision the scene unfolding before your very eyes. My dad did a tour with Paul the day before us and then again with us and he said it was totally different than what was covered on his previous tour. Paul knows what he’s talking about and I’d highly recommend him as a tour guide! My husband was totally impressed by Paul’s obvious research and passion.
